Deriving from the Aztec word “xocoatl,” chocolate had its beginnings in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica as a bitter drink brewed from cacao beans. The Latin name for the cacao tree, Theobroma cacao, means “food of the gods,” mirroring the Aztec belief that the cacao tree was brought from Paradise as a gift from the god Quetzalcoatl, who carried it to Earth on a beam of the Morning Star. Both the Maya and the Aztec believed chocolate had divine properties, and often used it as a component in their most sacred rituals. Only elite members of society were allowed to consume such a powerful drink.
