The orange is one of the rare plants that blooms at the same time as it bears fruit, becoming an emblem of fruitfulness and marriage. In ancient China, the orange blossom symbolized chastity, innocence and fertility. From the Far East, the orange blossom spread to the Middle East and Europe, and its symbolism traveled with it. In Greek mythology, the orange is thought to be the “golden apple” Hera gifted to Zeus for their wedding. The sweet blossom cemented its place as a symbol of marriage and fertility when Queen Victoria wore the flower in her wedding headdress.
