This majestic tree usually grows about 15 feet tall and is native to the Rocky Mountains. They have grey-green pointed and waxy leaves and a thick scaly aromatic bark. Because of its beautiful appearance it has long been sought after and decorated by Pagans and Christians for their Winter Holidays. The Picea pungens is the official state tree of Colorado. Native Americans have long used this tree as a medicinal plant. An infusion of the needles was used to treat colds, settle the stomach or for rheumatic pains. In ceremony, Natives often used branches of the Blue Spruce as gifts to bring good fortune.
